What we can’t film
Dreams are strange, dark, funny and wild, and almost all of them can be filmed. Monsters, chases, falling, storms, blood, ghosts, death, swearing and things that make no sense at all are fine. There are just three things we can’t put on screen.
1. Sexual content and nudity
We can’t film sex, nudity or anything sexually suggestive. You can still keep the closeness and the feeling.
“we made love” → “we held each other close”
“she was naked” → “she was in a thin white robe”
2. Real, recognisable people
We can’t film celebrities, politicians, athletes, influencers or anyone else the public would recognise, or imitate their face or voice. People from your own life are fine: “my mom”, “my boss” or “my friend Kasia” can all appear, played by someone dreamlike. For famous people, describe them instead of naming them.
“Taylor Swift” → “a tall blonde singer”
“John Lennon” → “a musician with round glasses”
3. Children on screen
Our video system can’t show anyone under 18. Children from your dream can still be part of the film without being seen: a voice, a small shadow, tiny shoes, a hand reaching out.
“my little brother” → “my little brother’s voice”
How the check works
While you type or dictate, your dream is checked for these three things. Anything that can’t be filmed is highlighted, and most come with a suggested swap you can apply with one tap. Nothing is filmed until your dream passes the check and you’ve seen the shot list.
Things the video system may still refuse
Films are made by Google’s video AI, which has its own safety rules. Even after our check, it can occasionally refuse a scene, for example for very graphic violence or gore, famous characters, brands or logos, hateful content or dangerous activities. If that happens, the scene is left out of your film and you aren’t charged for it. To avoid surprises, keep violence dreamlike rather than graphic, and describe famous characters and brands instead of naming them.
Why these rules exist
They protect real people’s privacy and likeness, keep children safe, and follow the rules of the AI services we use. They’re part of our Terms of Service. If you think something was flagged by mistake, rephrase it a little, or contact us.
